The Ottawa numbers, by source
Published prices for metal in Ottawa sit in a wide band, and the sources do not agree. HomeStars, built from jobs reported by homeowners, gives the average at about $22,500, with a lowest report of $7,500 and a highest of $55,000 or more. Firms that publish lists give narrower figures by profile, shown below.
| Profile | Per sq ft installed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Standing seam, steel | $12–$18 | Ottawa directory guide |
| Standing seam, aluminum | $14–$22 | Same guide |
| Standing seam, copper | $25–$45+ | Same guide |
| Metal shingles | $9–$16 | Same guide; RoofRoof lists $9–$16 plus HST |
| Exposed-fastener panels | $5–$10 | Same guide |
Alba Home Services, an Ottawa firm, quotes standing seam at $1,100–$1,600 per square (100 sq ft), which is $11–$16 per sq ft. Custom Contracting, a firm writing for Ontario, lists $14–$22 per sq ft in its 2026 guide.
Per house, not per foot
Roofers price the roof surface, and that is larger than the floor plan. The Ontario guide counts about 1,700 sq ft of roof on a 1,500 sq ft home. Its standing seam examples, tear-off included, run $21,000–$33,000 for that house, $27,000–$42,000 at 2,000 sq ft and $34,000–$52,000 at 2,500 sq ft. Those rows are labelled for Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo and southwestern Ontario, and the firm adds 15–20% for the Toronto area, so treat them as a scale check for an Ottawa house. Alba’s Ottawa range for a 2,000 sq ft home is $22,000–$32,000. RoofRoof says many Ottawa houses land between $18,000 and $40,000 or more.
What sits outside the panel price
The directory guide lists extras for Ottawa: removing the old roof at $1–$3 per sq ft, deck repair at $3–$8 per sq ft, snow guards at $500–$2,000, skylight or chimney flashing at $500–$1,500 per unit and ridge ventilation at $500–$1,500. Alba prices plywood decking at $85–$110 per sheet when rot appears. The snow guard layout is explained on standing seam metal.
What moves your number
- Profile and metal. Exposed-fastener panels sit at the bottom of every list, standing seam above, copper at the top.
- Pitch and cuts. Valleys, dormers and hips mean more cuts and trim, and steep slopes slow the crew.
- Old roof. Metal over shingles with a ventilation space avoids tear-off cost; a strip adds it back and shows the deck. The overview is on metal roofing.
- Lead time. Custom colours are ordered ahead, and a late start can push the install into the cold.
Metal against shingles
The directory sets asphalt at $5–$9 per sq ft, and Alba puts architectural shingles at $8,500–$12,000 on a 2,000 sq ft home. The same sources claim a life of four to five decades or more for metal against 15 to 25 for shingles. That is a sales claim, so ask the roofer for the written warranty term on the panel finish and on labour. The full range across jobs is in the roofing cost guide, and the shingle side is on the roof replacement cost page.
Reading a metal quote
Ask for the measured roof area, the profile with gauge and finish, each extra as a line, and the lead time. Ontario requires the contract to state the total with taxes, the schedule with dates and the payment schedule, and keeps its suggested deposit to 10% of the project or less. The contract rules show the rest.
Who you are dealing with
An independent Ottawa roofer measures the roof and writes the metal quote; this desk only forwards your details to it. The ranges above come from published lists, and the firm sets your figure once it has seen the house.
Questions to ask the company
- Is the price per square foot of roof surface or of floor area, and how many square feet did you measure?
- Which profile, metal and thickness are in the price, and which paint finish?
- Does the quote include tear-off, new underlayment, flashing, ridge ventilation and snow guards, each as a line?
- How long is the lead time for the panels in my colour, and what happens to the price if it slips?
- What is the price per sheet of decking if you find rot?
Have this ready for the call
- Floor area and storeys, plus the roof's shape: gables, dormers, valleys, hips
- How many shingle layers the roof has now, if the last owner told you
- The colour and profile you like, with a photo of a roof in that finish
- The doors, walks and driveway under each eave, for the snow guard plan
Questions people ask
Why is a metal roof priced by roof area and not by house area?
The roof is bigger than the footprint under it. One Ontario guide counts about 1,700 sq ft of roof for a 1,500 sq ft home, and pitch and overhang change it. Ask the roofer for the measured roof area so the per-foot prices on this page line up with your quote.
How does metal compare with shingles on the same Ottawa home?
On one Ottawa firm’s list for a 2,000 sq ft home, architectural shingles run $8,500–$12,000 and standing seam $22,000–$32,000. The Ontario guide puts metal at 2.5 to 3 times the up-front cost of architectural shingles and says it lasts two to three times longer, a claim to test against the written warranty.
Is aluminum dearer than steel for a standing seam roof?
The Ottawa directory lists aluminum standing seam at $14–$22 per sq ft installed and steel at $12–$18. Copper starts at $25 in the same list. Ask the roofer which metal is in the quote and why it was chosen for your house.
Can the price change after the crew starts?
A contract estimate is a ceiling with 10% of headroom; anything past that needs extra or different work signed as a change. Decking found rotten under old shingles is the usual change. Ask for the per-sheet price up front.
When do crews install metal in Ottawa?
One Ontario firm says custom-colour standing seam panels run 6 to 10 weeks in lead time, and that most metal installs pause once temperatures stay below –10°C. RoofRoof says a house takes 2 to 5 days on site. Book the panel order early and ask for dates in the contract.
